Western Spirit is an oil portrait of a couple who pioneered in the northwestern part of Montana. This painting was selected into a juried fine art show entitled, "Montana Portraits," and sponsored by the prestigious Hockaday Center for the Arts. From that show it was re-juried into another fine art Hockaday show in which it toured the state of Montana for a year. It was marked "Not for Sale" during both those shows, but It is now offered for sale.
Marjorie did an excellent job capturing the essence of life of this couple. Their faces tell the story – life was tough. They didn't have a lot, but through everything they maintained a sense of humor and an enjoyment for things they did have. To walk into their home was like walking back into days of "yesterday." These two people were precious; the kind of friend one would like to have. The lady of the portrait has passed on, the man is still his wonderful self.
When Marjorie works on a portrait, she takes the time to get to know her subject before any preliminary painting work begins. It's through this "acquainting" time she gains her grasp of the subject's character and personality that she'll bring out onto the canvas.
Marjorie specializes in portraits – portraits of people, wildlife, pets, and objects. She is adept at portraying onto canvas very realistic renditions of her subject, bringing onto canvas the very personality and character of, for instance, the person whom she's portraying. Her greatest desire is that the image on the canvas will be so very real to the viewer that the viewer will feel the actual presence of the person, or subject, portrayed.
